Brockhill Country Park was formerly part of a great estate that dates back to Norman times.
The old manor house is nowadays part of Brockhill School, and is to be found next to the park. A large, man-made lake forms the middle of the site. Two small islands are placed within the lake and the larger is the final resting place of William Tournay, the last lord of Brockhill Manor who died in 1903. The rabbit-grazed turf is perfect for low-growing herbs, and the rich variety of plants provide shelter for many striking butterflies.
Brockhill is a Site of Nature Conservation Interest and has three distinctive areas for visitors to explore:
· 'The Deer Paddock' is an beautiful grassy area with trees such as walnut and variegated sycamore
· 'The Lake' is a shady haven for wildlife, fringed with trees
· 'The Valley' is the principal area of the park and has alder trees along its centre, marking the course of the Brockhill stream.
There are two fabulous sign posted trails around the park that use the site as a base to explore the local area using the Public Rights of Way network. The lake trail will take up to 30 minutes, while the valley walk takes about 45 minutes and offers a scenic route around the valley at the southern end of the site. To the north, a short walk will take you to Postling Down, an area of unimproved ancient downland.
