Can you do justice to Kent in a single day? No!
“Kent in a day? No way!”
I looked askance at my American wife.
“You could spend a lifetime visiting Kent and never see it all,” I pleaded.
My wife shrugged her shoulders.
“Gee, it just looked kinda small on the map.”
I sighed, and pulled out a plan of southern England.
“First we could start with Canterbury. There’s the fabulous cathedral with hundreds and hundreds of years of history. That alone will take a day, and still there’d be more to see. Nearby we could take in the castle too. There may be just ruins now but it’s a fascinating place to see and read about. The town itself is full of historical houses, a range of shops and the Marlowe Theatre. I’m sure too we could find a great Canterbury holiday bed and breakfast to stay in and then we’ll have plenty of time to explore.
Fancy a day out on the south coast of Kent? We could visit Dover with its castle - one of English Heritage’s premier sites. There’s also the museum, the Roman Painted House and, of course, those beautiful White Cliffs to stroll along. We could even pop over to France for the day from the ferry terminal. Dover’s a brilliant location in Kent, ideal for a base to discover the county and beyond.
Another fascinating place to visit would be Broadstairs up on the east coast. They’ve had a water gala here for over one hundred years! There’s also a very well established Charles Dickens Festival each June and a Folk Festival each August. Broadstairs has some really quaint fishermen’s cottages in its back streets and many have been let out as holiday cottages. It’s a great way to experience life in the town.”
“Okay, dearest, I get the picture. There’s a lot to see and do in Kent. Maybe a week or two will do it?”
“Make it a month or two and you might do it justice! We’d have to visit Tunbridge Wells in the Weald. Although it’s a relatively ‘new’ town, having only become established in the early 17
th century, it’s famous for its Pantiles precinct and the spring water there. With many shops and shopping malls you can always find something to buy here, and the town is a wonderful location from which to explore the many tourist sites in the area. The so-called Seven Wonders of the Weald are all within eight miles of Tunbridge Wells, so find a Kent hotel and enjoy yourself!”
“That sound like quite enough for our first trip, dear.”
“Oh yeah, and I haven’t mentioned Romney Marsh with its ghostly smugglers’ tales, the Isle of Sheppey overlooking the River Thames, the county town of Maidstone and Tenterden with its well known steam railway.”
“I give in, dear, so maybe not ‘Kent in a day’ then. I think we’ll need plenty of return visits! Now, where’s that website offering Kent holiday accommodation...?”
