Details: Cliffe Pools is a great place to go for beautiful views over the North Kent Marshes, walks in a stunning setting or to enjoy the birdlife. Cliffe Pools are a mixture of saline lagoons, freshwater pools, grassland, saltmarsh and scrub. These habitats have developed on old clay diggings and river dredgings. Cliffe Pools is a relatively 'young' and developing site.

This environment brings in large numbers of birds, particularly waders and wildfowl. It is also a good place to see water voles, harvest mice and a variety of insects, such as the scarce emerald damselfly, shrill carder bee and green hairstreak butterfly. Plant species include nationally notable species, such as sea barley and annual beard grass. It is well known as a site for wading birds, with massed flocks moving from the Thames Estuary onto the pools on winter high tides, a wide range of passage birds in autumn and spring, and breeding avocets, redshanks, lapwings and ringed plovers.

Visitor guide

Six viewing points/mounds overlook fresh pools and saline lagoons including the Pinnacle Viewpoint, which gives superb views over the reserve and wider Thames area.

No nature trails yet but public rights of way surround the reserve and bisect it, giving good views of the birdlife.

Nearest railway station
Higham, 3 miles (5 km), and Strood, 5 miles (8 km) away, are the nearest stations. Paths are largely suitable for electric scooter.

You can park in the village close to St Helen's Church (behind the Six Bells) in Cliffe village, and walk down Pond Lane onto the reserve. A number of rights of way run through the site (see OS Explorer 163 - Buy your maps here: Maps).
