Details: Dickens World is a Dickensian-themed attraction in Chatham and only opened in May 2007.

Charles Dickens lived most of his childhood in Chatham, where his father worked as a clerk in the Naval Dockyard. This period of his life was his happiest and he drew upon his experiences and memories of Chatham and Rochester to feature in many of his books.
The in-house attraction reproduces the architecture of the period with picturesque archways, cobbled stoned streets and decorative features, together with specialised lighting and appropriate euphonics as well as a host of costumed characters, shop keepers and street entertainers.

Rides and animatronics are by RMA, one of the leading UK tectonic specialists in the country. The experience features a Dickensian Shopping Mall, together with a multitude of attractions and rides, including a mix of themed restaurants, bars and a multiplex cinema. Dickens World also has facilities for seasonal variations, particularly over the Christmas period in which the attraction converts into a Dickensian winter wonderland, replete with snow and other characteristics of a bygone era, complemented by a magnificent water feature which over the festive season changes into a spectacular 'ice fantasia' dominated by 'The Spirit of Christmas', 'Jack Frost', 'Scrooge' and a host of other delightful characters who magically come to life. This and other seasonal events throughout the year provide an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages!

A series of 'burlesque' evening dinner shows are being especially created to provide a nightly menu of 'naughty delights' in the 'Free and Easy' Victorian Music Hall.

Visitors will feel as though they have returned to one of the most exciting periods of British History to see ‘The Best and Worst of Times’ as they immerse themselves in the imposing architecture and street scenes which are so vividly described in Dickens’ novels, supported by our cast of characters who bring his world to life. It features Europe’s largest themed dark boat ride, transporting visitors from the depths of London’s sewers through atmospheric streets, courtyards, markets and shops, to a magical flight across the roof tops of London. The ghosts of Ebenezer Scrooge will come back to haunt you in the Haunted House and children can have fun in Fagin’s Den – the children’s play area. A 250-seater ‘theatre’ provides an up to the minute multi-sensory animatronic performance throughout the day, and a live ‘supper’ show in the evening.

The courtyard areas allow visitors to wander freely around the Dickens World attraction, soaking up the atmosphere and exploring the streets, alleys, courtyards, dockside, shops and a themed restaurant. Peggoty’s Boat House – a moving platform experience, The School Room – The Dreaded Disciplines of Victorian Education, Crime and Punishment and The Old Curiosity Shoppe complete the experience.

Working with The Dickens Fellowship great attention has been paid to the authenticity of the time, characters and story lines. It offers a new and entertaining way to enjoy Dickens and his characters as well as gaining an understanding of the times and conditions people experienced living in England in the early 19th century. Dickens World has a predicted dwell time of four hours and can offer an exciting and full day out in conjunction with the other facilities on the site. In addition, visitors can take advantage of a number of branded restaurants, cafes and bars, the nearby Royal Historic Dockyard , a factory outlet shopping mall and a nine-screen multiplex cinema operated by Odeon.

Prices:
• £12.50 for adults
• £7.50 for children
• £10.50 for concessions.

Access
Dickens World is fully accessible for all visitors. The only limitation is the Great Expectations Boat Ride of which we do ask that all visitors can get in and out of the boat themselves, for emergency reasons. Wheelchairs are not available to hire.
