Details: Until 1860, when the present house was built, Emmetts Garden used to be farmland,. (This three-storey Victorian villa and garden surrounding the gardens are not open to visitors.) The name 'Emmetts' comes from the old local word for the huge anthills which packed the woodlands until the 1950s. This may have inclined Frederick Lubbock's decision to buy the garden as his eldest brother - John, Lord Avebury - was an acknowledged expert on ants. The garden design was influenced by William Robinson.

This delightful and informal garden at the highest point in Kent was set out in the late 19th century, with many unusual and rare trees and shrubs from across the world. There are magnificent shows of daffodils, bluebells and azaleas in spring, rhododendrons and Ghent azaleas in early summer, roses in late summer and the radiant autumnal foliage of acers and cornus in September and October.

The area was changed considerably by the 1987 hurricane and spectacular new views opened up. These can be enjoyed from the hilltop tea-garden.
