Two Worlds at Dickens World
Cranford September 22nd - December 3rd 2008
Little Dorrit January 24th - April 19th 2009
Charles Dickens published Little Dorrit between 1855 and 1857. The story centres on The Marshalse where his own father was imprisoned for debt. The notorious prison in London's Southwark closed in 1842. Today only a gate remains although the prison has been recreated in the Crime and Punishment area of Dickens World.

Elizabeth Gaskell's writing was hugely admired by Charles Dickens. Indeed he edited and published some of her works.
Unlike the costumes of Little Dorrit, where the costumes reflect the rude exuberance of London life, Cranford is set in rural Cheshire in 1842/3 (actually based on the real town of Knutsford). Cranford is a town dominated by women comfortably settled in the rural way of life.
