Details: Aylesford is said to be the oldest village in England. Its name comes from "Angle's Ford" - the place where the county's first invaders crossed the river Medway. Brothers Hengist and Horsa, leaders of the first Anglo-Saxon invasion, landed in Aylesford in 449AD and set themselves up as the first kings of Kent. Horsa was killed in 455; his brother Hengist lived another 33 years.

Hengist itself dates back to the 1560s and has a varied history that includes a previous life as a restaurant. Today, the restaurant is fast becoming one of the most famous in Kent, attracting connoisseurs of fine dining from all over the southeast and beyond. The Perfect Group's restoration of Hengist has been carefully and sympathetically completed, paying close attention to the building's original features. Note how the beautiful chocolate suede clad walls perfectly enhance the oak beams and the original stonework in the lobby; features which juxtapose to great effect with the decadence of the building's new décor. Visiting Hengist is as much a lesson in fine interior design as it is a memorable eating experience.

Bar & Lounge
Hengist's bar and lounge have been designed with great attention to detail, and with your comfort and intimacy in mind. Textures used throughout - a combination of leathers, skins and candles - lend a sumptuous feeling to the area and make it an ideal place to enjoy pre-dinner drinks and relax after your meal. Our extensive wine, champagne and cocktail list is certain to have something for every taste and a humidor adds a touch of class for those who wish to indulge in the finest cigars.

Restaurant
The unique dining experience that is Hengist has been carefully and lovingly nurtured by proprietors Paul Smith, Kevin James and Richard Phillips for those looking for the best business and social dining venue. The cosy intimacy of the main dining area complements the very individual private dining rooms, and its close proximity to the motorway and food and wine of the utmost quality make Hengist the ultimate choice for corporate or private dining.

The modern French cuisine at Hengist uses the traditional rich ingredients and heavy sauces that are expected of this continental gastronomy, but with modern twists and the occasional inspirational ingredient added by executive and head chefs Richard Phillips and Jean - Marc Zanetti for good measure and your pleasure. The resulting flavours when sampled in this luxurious and sophisticated setting will ensure you a splendid event, whatever the occasion.

Two dining rooms are available for lunches, dinners, private parties or wedding receptions:

Japanese Room
Dramatic decadence awaits you in the Japanese Room, seating 18 people. Its decoration is best appreciated by night when the subtle red light adds to the striking colour effect of this room. Unique black lacquer furniture, red lighting and extraordinary brass marquetry will conjure an impressive setting for any function.

Crystal Room
The Crystal Room seats 14 people in an intimate setting, with a crystal chandelier providing a spectacular centrepiece. An open fireplace enhances the romance of the room. It sparkles due to a crystal bath in which the fire sits. Elegant white voiles drape over impressive candelabras, reflected to great effect by immense mirrors.

Come and dine with us – it will be an experience you will never forget.
