Details: The oak and scrub woodland of Northward Hill Reserve makes for an outstanding birdlife experience. The site includes the UK's largest heronry, and little egrets can also be seen.

This reserve consists of restored marshes and woodland. The marshes were drained in the 20th century for arable crops, but have now been returned to wet grassland, creating the precise environment for breeding lapwings and redshanks and large flocks of wintering ducks. In the wood, the Heronry has about 150 pairs of nesting grey herons and 50 pairs of little egrets from February to May. In spring, resident breeding birds such as woodpeckers and tits are joined by turtle doves, nightingales and warblers. There are widespread swathes of bluebells.

Over six miles of quiet woodland trails with panoramic views of the North Kent Marshes can be enjoyed. There are four trails, varying in length from 0.5 mile (0.8 km) to 4 miles (6.5 km).

Dogs are only allowed on public footpaths and bridleways.
