Details: Pegwell Bay Country Park forms part of the Pegwell Bay/Sandwich Bay Local Nature Reserve and has a combination of wildlife habitats found nowhere else in the South East of England. The Park is jointly owned and managed by Kent County Council and the Kent Wildlife Trust.

The Country Park is a good point from which to explore the northern section of the reserve. The Country Park itself was once a landfill site, which was covered in topsoil and planted with trees and is now a wildlife haven in its own right. There is a waymarked trail around the site and a hide ideally placed for observing the birdlife of the mudflats and estuary. The dune systems are to be found in the southern and central sections.

In the summer the grass is dotted with wild flowers such as orchids and broomrapes. In the winter the foreshore and mudflats attract thousands of wading birds, including dunlin, sanderling and grey plover. Birds of prey, such as Merlin, can also be seen at the site. Birdwatchers can use the public bird hide, which is also accessible for disabled visitors.

There are excellent opportunities to explore beyond the park using the Public Rights of Way, especially using the Saxon Shore Way which passes through the site. The park is a Ramsar Site of International Importance and is a wonderful place to explore.

Country Park and northern section of the Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve is signposted from the A256 north of Sandwich. The Southern section - from Sandwich town centre, take Sandown Road and Guilford Road to the Sandwich Bay Estate (a toll is payable) then follow Princes Drive north to the car park.
The nearest train station is Sandwich (5 miles).
