Cycling

Details: Regional Cycle Route 12 between Tonbridge Castle and Penshurst Place offers a unbelievable, nearly wholly traffic-free ride from the centre of Tonbridge alongside the River Medway, out into the countryside as far as the splendid buildings of Penshurst Place, some 5 miles (8km), to the west.

This cycle ride goes past playing fields on the edge of Tonbridge and into Haysden Country Park, running around the edge of Barden Lake with its wide range of birdlife. Soon after passing beneath the A21 it enters charming, lush broadleaf woodland covered with wildflowers in the spring and a pleasure in autumn as the colours change.

The one evident climb comes between the bridge over the River Medway and Well Place Farm. The short climb is compensated with wide-ranging views of the immediate countryside before a fine descent past two lakes to arrive at Penshurst Place, the most excellent and complete instance in England of 14th-century domestic architecture.

Cycle-ops at 148 High Street, Tonbridge can arrange cycle hire. Tel: 01732 500533
