Details: Westenhanger Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument with a Grade 1 listed house; this reflects both its national and historic importance. It belongs to a group of early quadrangular castles and manor houses that were strengthened in response to threats of attack from France during the 14th Century.

The Castle is situated conveniently at the junction of the Roman-built Stone Street from Canterbury to Port Lympne and the main route to London. It is close to the stone quarry of Otterpool and a water supply from the East Stour headwater.
Despite the site's undoubted Norman origins there is no evidence to suggest any serious fortifications were actually built until the licence to crenellate was granted to Sir John de Criol by Edward III in 1343. Before this date there probably stood a large hall or palace with perhaps a surrounding moat and possibly a wood palisade. What is certain is that the defensive towers and high curtain wall were not built until around 1400.

Opening times
Annually, the castle is opened over a weekend to give the public an opportunity to see the extensive work that has taken place during the year. The Medieval Siege Society also set-up camp at the castle, giving battle re-enactments and offering an insight into medieval life.

For the first time, the castle will be open on Tuesdays from 5 June to 18 September. The castle owners and historians will be available throughout the day to give you an insight into the castle, its history and the conservation work that has taken, and is taking, place. The castle and grounds will be open from 10am to 4pm.

Westenhanger Castle is also licensed for civil weddings, partnerships and blessings. The unique site is perfect for corporate product launches, meetings, conferences and balls.

Please note the castle is not open for 'ad-hoc' visits.

Private guided tours
Available for private groups and parties of at least 15 people. Guided by the castle owners or historians, receive a personalised visit to some parts of the castle not usually seen by the general public. Prices start at £6.50 per head. Light refreshments can be arranged in advance. Please phone Graham Forge on 01227 738223 for more details.
