Details: Whilst cherishing its past, planners have kept Canterbury's sights set on the future and new, high quality developments such as Whitefriars will ensure that the city maintains its strong position as a leading retail, business, tourist and leisure destination.

Located within Canterbury’s medieval city walls, Whitefriars lies to the south west of the city centre. The multi-million-pound the development has re-shaped a substantial area of the centre. Whitefriars covers approximately one eighth of the total area within the city walls and provides a natural flow between the existing city fabric and the new development with its lively mix of uses.

The £140 million Whitefriars shopping area opened in September 2005 and is now fully trading.

Whitefriars is an open air shopping area that reflects Canterbury's traditional street style, yet offers an impressive collection of some of the country's most popular fashion and lifestyle retailers. The Fenwick department store has introduced 'brand heaven' to the city centre and heads up an extensive retail line up that includes a major new shopping street featuring Zara, H&M, USC, Monsoon/Accessorize, Republic/Schuh, Next, Jane Norman, Top Shop/Top Man, Esprit, River Island and Qube.

The scheme also includes a 530-space multi-storey car park, shopmobility site, an integrated transport interchange including the bus station and cycle facility and 30 new city centre apartments which will enhance the vitality of the area well into the evening.

Getting here
By car
Canterbury has good road connections, with the M20 (M25/M26) and M2 motorways closeby providing easy links from East Kent, London & beyond. The A2 is the main route into Canterbury from further north. Once on the A2 Canterbury will be signposted left onto the A2050. Continue along the A2050 for about 5 minutes until you arrive in Canterbury. Continue over the 1st roundabout along Rheims Way and at the 2nd roundabout turn right along Rheims Way. Habitat will be on your right once you approach the 3rd roundabout. Continue straight over along Pin Hill. The city walls will be on your left. Continue until you come to a 4th roundabout. The Police Station will be on your right and the Fire Station straight over on the right. Turn left at this roundabout under the city walls into Watling Street. The Whitefriars multi-storey car park is straight ahead and right at the mini-roundabout.

By train
Canterbury has two mainline railway stations, East & West, and is served by frequent trains to and from London Charing Cross and Victoria (journey time approximately 1 ½ hours) and elsewhere in Kent. Both stations are located just outside the city walls and Whitefriars is just a short walk (between 10 - 20 minutes) into the city.

Park and ride
There are three Park & Ride sites, at Wincheap, New Dover Road and Sturry Road. The buses stop at a number of intermediate stops between the car parks and the city centre. The buses currently run regularly between 7am and 8pm, Monday to Saturday, into the city centre. On Sundays buses currently run from New Dover Road park and Ride between 10am and 6pm, on a trial basis. For just £2 per car, a driver and up to six passengers can park and take a return bus into the city centre. Click here for details: Park&Ride
